Seamless Integration of Wind Generation Into Smart Grid Wei-Jen Lee, Ph.D., PE Director and Professor Energy Systems Research Center University of Texas at Arlington October 30, 2009 Introduction The electrical power system in the US has been named as the supreme engineering achievement of the 20th century by the National Academy of Sciences. While the grid is a technological marvel, it is also reaching the limit of its ability to meet the future electricity needs. Introduction The current grid system was built on the assumption that all electricity would be generated at very large central plants. It is difficult for the system to adjust to changing demand patterns, much less to use energy in an intelligent manner for greatest efficiency. In addition, we are moving into the digital information age that demands higher reliability. Introduction Current aging electrical delivery system will not be able to fulfill this requirements. It is important to have forward looking and develop an advanced electric power system to meet the needs of society. Vision of “Grid 2030” “Grid 2030 energizes a competitive North American marketplace for electricity. It connects everyone to abundant, affordable, clean, efficient, and reliable electric power anytime, anywhere. It provides the best and most secure electric services available in the world.” Desired Features of Smart Grid Standardized Architecture Secure Communication Standards There is no standard on the smart grid architecture. Communication is the backbone of the smart grid. Future grid system will face more and more cyber security threats. Desired Features of Smart Grid Advanced Components Operating Concepts Develop Intelligent Electric Devices (IED) to improve the visualization of the power system.
