Alexander Pope Pope strongly advocated neoclassicism, emphasizing that literary works should be judged by classic rules of order, reason, and logic. He developed a satiric, concise, smooth, graceful and well-balanced style and he brought the heroic couplet to the highest perfection. Major works An Essay on Criticism (1711), The Rape of the Lock (1712), The Dunciad (1728) An Essay on Man (1733-1734) The translated Homer’s Iliad (1720) and Odyssey (1726) Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) A poet An essayist A moralist A novelist A literary critic A biographer An editor A lexicographer Style His language is very formal, and his sentences are long and well structured, full of parallel words and phrases. However, no matter how complex his sentences are, the thought is always clearly expressed. He worked at different times as a government agent and he was one of the most famous political pamphleteers of the time. Literary Career He wrote a lot of political pamphlets, including his remarkable “The Shortest Way with the Dissenters”. When he was nearly sixty, he turned to fiction and wrote some great works. Robinson Crusoe was an instant success, and other stories followed rapidly.
