Not Machine Translation (MT), which is fully automatic (e.g. Systran, Google Translate) : ‘MT is the application of computers to the task of translating texts from one natural language to another.’ 4 What is translation memory? Esselink (2000: 362): ‘A technology that enables the user to store translated phrases or sentences in a special database for local re-use or shared use over a network. TM systems work by matching terms and sentences in the database with those in the source text. If a match is found, the system proposes the ready-made translation in the target language.’ Current examples of TM tools SDL Trados Studio 2009/2011/2014 Wordfast (Classic/Pro) Transit NXT DVX Omega T MemoQ Across MultiTrans 5 6 How do TM tools work? TM software: analyses an electronic source file splits the ST into segments or units compares and matches ST segments with previous translations stored in the TM compares and matches ST segments with the target text entered by the human translator as s/he translates stores new matched segments for use in future translation tasks 7 How SDL Trados works ‘You open the source file and apply the TM. Any 100% matches (identical matches) or fuzzy matches (similar, but not identical matches) within the text are instantly extracted and placed within the target file. As you work through the source file, the matches suggested by the TM can be either accepted or overridden with new alternatives. If a translation unit is manually updated, then it is stored in the TM for future use as well as for repetition in the current text. All segments in the target file without a match are translated manually and then automatically added to the TM.’ /en/translator
