Stress the increase TIR on the weldon collet systems vs. the “precision” systems……. * Prerequisite 2: Rigid holding system The carbide tool is stiff and thus – unlike tools with steel bodies – the tool body cannot compensate for any effects of unbalance in the holding system. Therefore, a well-balanced and rigid tool-holding system is a must. Runout is then the important factor, since it has great effect on both surface finish and tool life. CoroGrip is example of an excellent choice of tool holder. It offers a maximum runout of only 0.002-0.006 at a tool protrusion (outstick) of 3 times the mill diameter! However, runout is not only caused by the tool holder, but all the items between the tool holder and the machine spindle, i.e. the modular holding system and any extenders, add to the total runout value. This means that each coupling should have as little runout as possible in order to meet the acceptable total value of 0.0008 mm – or, preferably, 0.0004”. A good rule of thumb: For every 0.01 mm (= 10 microns) increased runout, the tool life decreases by 50%.
