We learn through the socialisation processes provided by family, school, peers, media etc. ?Deliberate learning (e.g. school, reading, training) can be difficult or unpleasant, or it can be enjoyable and fulfilling. ?Learning is Natural ?Learning is a personal and natural process. No-one can learn for you. No-one can be compelled to learn. It is a voluntary process, usually based on some form of incentive. ?It seems to be improved by a proactive stance, and an acceptance of personal responsibility for learning. ?Learning Means Change ?Learning involves change - the addition or removal of something. Adult learning often involves some “unlearning”. The change may be as small as attaching a name to a face, or as large as making a major re-orientation of your values and self-perception. ?Learning is linked with Human Development Learning affects and is affected by the biological and physical changes in personality, values, roles and tasks that usually occur over the usual human lifespan. ?Learning can help trigger movement from one stage to the next, while those changes can themselves foster learning. Learning can help us cope (or otherwise) with major changes like marriage, retirement or the loss of a loved one, and/or those milestones can generate new learning. ?Learning relates to Experience and Experiencing ?To learn is to interact with one’s environment. ?Adults have experienced vastly more than children, and have had experiences of greater impact as a rule (e.g. having children, making decisions with long-term consequences).
