Developing the Essential Shared Capabilities – a networking event

Developing the Essential Shared Capabilities – a networking event Nottingham Racecourse, 1 December 2005 This was the second of a series of events focusing on education and training within Trent region. It was attended by 67 people from a range of disciplines and settings, including a number of service users and carers. The day began with a presentation by Ian Baguley on the Ten Essential Shared Capabilities and national workforce strategy. It continued with discussion in small groups and concluded with a plenary discussion. The Ten Essential Shared Capabilities: a framework for the whole of the mental health workforce is intended to make explicit what should be included as core in the curricula of all pre and post-qualification training for professional and non-professionally affiliated staff, as well as embedded in induction and continuing professional/practitioner development. As well as an overview of the framework, this meeting provided, for each small group, an opportunity to focus in some depth on a single capability. 1. Feedback from small groups The same small groups met on two occasions (before and after coffee) In the first session groups were asked, in relation to a single Essential Shared Capability, to consider: How do you know when someone is doing this (ie is capable in this area)? What does it look like in practice? What would you expect them to be able to do? (skills) What would you expect them to know? (knowledge) What values and attitudes would you expect them to have? (values) In the second session, group members were asked to put themselves into the shoes of an educational provider. They were asked to choose one value, skill and area of knowledge and consider what training inputs would be needed to develop capability in those areas (drawing, if possible, on experience within the group). For overall feedback on the role small groups played in the day see the evaluation. a) Working in partnership Session one Following discussion
