L/O/G/O Personal and Impersonal Style of Writing Personal Style Personal writing involves an intimate, simple, direct and personal style. Expression of individual approach plays a key role in personal writing. This kind of style conveys the inner convictions, beliefs, dreams or ideals of an author in an intensely personal manner. An autobiography is a presentation of the private emotions and memories of an author. Like wise, this style is used in casual writing e.g assignments, diaries, e-mail messages, text messages and social network postings. Impersonal Style Impersonal writing style demands a reality conceived as exclusive of authors’ thoughts and experiences. It deals with outward things, treats with events or phenomena as external rather than affected by the reflection of the observer. This style is used for official documents, computer documentation, scholarly articles and books and essays. Differences between Personal and Impersonal Styles  An appropriate writing style is opted only after the choice of target audience i-e writing for friends, colleagues, lecturers or board of directors, etc. Situations like applying for a job or communicating with a client are obviously impersonal, while others like emailing or texting a friend or relative are personal. Distinctive Features  The features that distinguish personal and impersonal styles are as under; Contractions 缩略形式 Personal writing, like online content, is acceptable in the form of contractions e.g “don’t” or “can’t” but in impersonal writing, words must be wholly expanded such as “do not”, “cannot” or “must not”. Active and Passive Voice 主动和被动语态 Personal Style uses active voice while impersonal style uses passive voice. Example Active: How did you answer the question? Passive: How was the question answered by you? Personal Pronouns人称代词 In personal style of writing, first person pronouns are used rather than third
