Introduction Beyond active learning: As technology has transformed library instruction a constructivist classrooms, librarians have worked to transform approach to learning their teaching strategies to take advantage of these new educational settings. They have embraced concepts such as active learning, hands-on Susan E. Cooperstein and instruction, and cooperative learning. Library Elizabeth Kocevar-Weidinger literature and conference topics indicate that we need not convince librarians that these strategies are effective for teaching library skills. However, an analysis of much of this literature championing active learning reveals comments such as, “After a brief demonstration . . .,” “After explaining basic concepts . . .”, “The librarian explains . . .”, “Students apply strategies that they have learned . . .” and “Students practice skills demonstrated . . .”.
