Systems Based Traditional Chinese Medicine Studies Xiaojie Xu Peking University What is TCM Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complex system consisting of combinatorial herbs ( including animals and minerals) according to TCM theory and is a complex Natural multicomponent drugs interacting with multiple targets and pathways based on human whole system. A system as an “entity that maintains its existence through the mutual interaction of its parts.Systems research must combine (i) the identification and (ii) the detailed characterization of parts with the exploration of their interactions with each other(iii)with the environment affecting parts either directly or indirectly, (iv) a systemic understanding of the entity. One of the central challenges in complex-systems research is establishing how the interactions between the components in a system give rise to emergent properties; that is, characteristics of the system that cannot be described to any of its components acting in isolation. Systems Biology Systems biology is a new field that aims to gain system-level understanding of complex functions of biological systems and biological processes, ranging from molecules to cells, tissues, or entire organisms.
