“Eveline” By James Joyce James Joyce (1882- 1941) The most prominent stream-of-consciousness novelist His virtuoso/ artistic experiments in writing have recreated the form of modern novel. Techniques In his writings, Joyce likes to use references to ancient stories and adopts a completely new style of writing which allows the reader to move inside the minds of the characters, and presents their thoughts and feelings in a continuous dream. This style is known as “stream of consciousness”意识流, and it has had a powerful influence on the work of many other modernist writers. Master pieces: Dubliners(1914): a collection of 15 short stories, all realistic and impressionistic studies of the Irish capital. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916): Joyce’s semi-autobiographical novel. Ulysses (1922): an experimental work both in language and devices of narration. A center of controversy. Three major characters: Leopold Bloom, an Irish Jew, his wife, Marion Tweedy Bloom, and Stephen Dedalus, the protagonist in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. It present a realistic picture of the modem wasteland in which modem men are portrayed as vulgar and trivial creatures with splitting personalities, disillusioned ideals, sordid minds and broken families, who are searching in vain for harmonious human relationships and spiritual sustenance in a decaying world. Finnegans Wake (1939): Joyce’s last novel, went even further in his experiments with his writing method, stream of consciousness; Full of mixed-up sentences, words created from other languages, allusions. In this paralyzed city, everything stands under the sway of priests牧师. The young may dream of escaping from the narrow confines, but since even their dreams of getting away are shaped in the existing surroundings, their efforts often end in bitter resignation or fruitless discontent.
