Disillusioned by the warfare and disgusted by the materially merry-making and spiritually empty life in America, some writers began to write from their own experiences in the first world war. They were basically expatriates who left America and started a community of writers and artists in Paris. They experimented on new modes of thought and expression. These writers were later named by an American writer, Gertrude Stein, The Lost Generation. Gertrude Stein As a writer, Hemingway vividly recorded those physically and mentally wounded soldiers, revealed the frustration, loneliness and disillusionment of modern people whose ideals were shattered at a time when “God is dead.” The horror and menace, the anguish and dereliction (懈怠), and the futility and sterility expressed in his works had been afflicting all sensitive members of the post-war generation.
