Lesson Twelve Study on Editorials Class Objective Introduction to Editorial Reading Practice Culture introduction Introduction to Editorial Definition of Editorial An editorial is an article that presents the newspaper‘s opinion on a current news story, which reflects the majority vote(多数表决) of the editorial board and the governing body of the newspaper made up of editors and business managers. In essence, an editorial is an opinionated news story (a combination of facts and opinions), and it is subjective. Introduction to Editorial Aims of Editorial Editorial writers build on an argument and try to persuade readers to think the same way as they do. ★ to influence public opinion; ★ to promote critical thinking; ★ to cause people to take action on an issue. Elements of an Editorial 1. Introduction (Lead), body and conclusion like news stories; 2. An objective(客观) explanation of the issue, especially complex issues; 3. Opinions from the opposing viewpoint, which refute(反驳) directly the same issues the writer addresses； Elements of an Editorial 4. Opinions of the writer, which are delivered in a professional manner. ★ Good editorials focus on issues, not personalities; ★ Good editorials refrain from (避免) name-calling(骂人) or other petty tactics of persuasion.
