Florence was under attack by Milan and Naples up until 1425 when it went into alliance with Venice. The Florentine republican ideals were hard won, and they sought a visual language in which to represent them and that language looked to the first and most major republic: Rome. The myth that Florence was founded by Republicans is important and Florentines used it to justify their art through its glorious past and the fact that they were one of the few city states that were not run by princes or the Pope.
