The Portrait of a Lady, one of the masterpieces of his early phase, has won many critical acclaim since its first publication in 1881. Some reviewers don’t understand the novel’s ending: the independent Isabel chooses to maintain a miserable marriage with the hypocritical Osmond. As for the puzzling ending, many scholars from home and abroad have attempted to give reasonable explanations from different perspectives. However, few people find its research value from the point of psychology. Based on the previous research on the explanations of Isabel’s tragedy, the paper tries to interpret her marriage dilemma in the psychological perspective by applying Freudian psychoanalytic theories, mainly the Personality Structure and Oedipus complex. Isabel’s marriage dilemma results from Isabel’s conflict between the id and the superego. The former is represented by her drive of freedom and imagination; the latter is represented by her commitment to social requirement and her ego-ideal of self perfection by learning European civilization.
