Cultural Notes Uncle Tom’s Cabin: a novel (1852) written by the US writer Harriet Beecher Stowe, is one of the most famous and popular pieces of Civil War literature. It is said that….. Harriet Beecher Stowe Born in June 14th, 1811, she was the seventh child of a famous protestant preacher. She wrote this famous novel after she vitnessed miracles of several slaves.Soon,Uncle Tom’s Cabin become one of the best-sellers in the 19th century.She died at the age of 85, in Hartford Conneticutt. The author reveals these shocking facts of slavery in order to arouse the public resonance for abolishing the evil system. And it’s been proved successful in delivering her theme. Until now it is still powerful and represents that turbulent American history. Hariet Beecher Stowe was partly inspired to create Uncle Toms Cabin by the autobiography of Josiah Henson, a black man who lived and worked on a tobacco plantation in North Bethesda, Maryland. Henson escaped slavery in 1830 by fleeing to Canada where he helped other fugitive slaves arrive and become self-sufficient, and where he wrote his memoirs. The main character--Uncle Tom Uncle Tom is good-willed, loyal, and submissive, and has been recognized as a tragic figure. As a slave, he worked miserably for his owners, and helped his fellows self-sacrificially throughout his life. He is a real hero. His obedience selflessness and universal love towards others establish a noble image in people’s hearts. However, such a kind-hearted man should have been beaten to death!
