From the dawn of computing to the early 1980s, mainframes were the dominant server for all corporate workloads. Virtualization emerged in the 1960s with mainframes because of the need to have multiple systems running on the same machine. But, as smaller machines became more powerful and could handle more workloads, customers moved away from mainframes. This change resulted in reduced up-front costs for hardware, but it made IT operations more complex because different hardware, operating systems, storage, and networking were being juggled in a heterogeneous network environment. The issue of making all systems work harmoniously together became even worse as the number of servers proliferated through the 1990s.
