Text for diagram of virtual steering axis: The virtual steering axis is the line around which the road wheel turns when the steering is moved away from the straight-ahead position. The wheel contact point is where traction forces reach the road surface. The smaller the distance between the virtual steering axis and the wheel contact point, the shorter the length of the lever by means of which external forces act on the steering. (This disturbance effect is obtained by multiplying the force by the leverage.) In the case of the four-link front suspension, the virtual steering axis passes almost exactly through the centre of the wheel. This is only possible because of the special four-link design of the suspension; it would not be practicable if double wishbones were used.Low leverage force, for example, reduces the car’s tendency to break away to one side if the wheels on that side of the car encounter a loose or soft surface.On the Audi A8 the distance between steering axis and wheel contact point is only 20 millimetres, on the Audi A4 as low as 10 mm (compared with 66 mm on the Audi 80). This effectively rules out any driveline influences on the steering.
