Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672) the first noted poetess in colonial period Anne Bradstreet’s Works “Some verses on the Burning of Our House” “The Spirit and the Flesh” The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America Anne Bradstreet’s Life * She was born and educated in England. * At the age of 18, she came to America in 1630 with her father and husband. * She had 8 children. * She became known as the “Tenth Muse” who appeared in America. the first collection published by English colonists living in America * Anne Bradstreet To My Dear and Loving Husband (1678) uses the oriental imagery, love theme, and idea of comparison popular in Europe at the time, but gives these a pious meaning at the poems conclusion: If ever two were one, then surely we. If ever man were loved by wife, then thee; If ever wife was happy in a man, Compare with me, ye women, if you can. I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold Or all the riches that the East doth hold. My love is such that rivers cannot quench, Nor ought but love from thee, give recompense. Thy love is such I can no way repay, The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray. Then while we live, in love let s so persevere That when we live no more, we may live ever. * 2.
