Unit 9 Social Movements of the 1960s Focal Points ● The Greensboro Sit-In  ● The Civil Rights Movement  ● Rosa Parks   ● Martin Luther King, Jr.  ● The Counter Culture  ● Womens Liberation Movement The Greensboro Sit-in When: Feb. 1, 1960 Where: a black college in Greensboro, North Carolina Who: 4 freshmen from a black college What: The 4 black students, believing the segregation law which kept black and white people from eating together was wrong, continued to sit at the counter. Results: The?Greensboro?sit-in should be remembered as a famous?civil rights event, which is a classic form of non-violent?resistance. The Civil Rights Movement When: 1955 Where: a public bus in Montgomery Who: Rosa Parks What: refusing to give her seat to the white man Results: Segregation was breaking down. Rosa Parks The spontaneous action of one woman, Rosa Parks, was believed to be the true beginning of the civil rights movement, 5 years before the Greensboro students sit-in. Martin Luther King, Jr. On August 28, 1963, after meeting with President John F. Kennedy, Dr. King delivered his famous I Have a Dream speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd estimated at 250,000. To improve the racial relations, the Civil Rights Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Johnson in the summer of 1964. On December 10, 1964, Dr. King received the Nobel Peace Prize. The Counter Culture The counterculture rejected capitalism and other American principles. They had morals different from those taught by their parents. Some groups of youth tied to construct different ways of life. The counterculture exerted a great influence upon people’s attitudes towards social morals, marriage, career and success. The “Hippies” Among the famous were the “Hippies”. They wore long hair, strange and colorful clothes and many of them used drugs. The “Hippies” called themselves the love generation. Happiness became their only goal in life. They sought new experience
