Chaplin is noted for his rapid - fire vocal style and his mixture of humor with social and political commentary often speaking out against violence, drug abuse and disrespect to women. Passage C Para 1 Did you ever think about what makes you laugh? Charlie Chaplin found the secret of making people laugh, and it worked wherever his films were shown. With his funny performance, Chaplin created the Little Tramp of silent films. No film character has ever been more widely enjoyed. Chaplin acted the part of his tramp as an insecure fellow, always running into trouble but coming out of each situation with his pride unhurt. People still laugh at the little man’s struggles with people bigger than him. Chaplin also knew how to bring a tear to the eye with just the right amount of sadness. Passage C Para 2 Charlie Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889, in London. His childhood was one of extreme poverty. But Charlie showed an early gift for acting and longed to be an actor. He went to the United States for the first time in 1910 as part of a troupe. In 1913, the troupe traveled in the United States, and Chaplin met the film producer Mack Sennett. His first short film, Making a Living, was made in 1914 for Sennett. By 1915, Chaplin was world-famous and making $1,250 a week. Passage C Para 3 His talent was remarkable. He wrote, directed, and produced most of the films in which he appeared. He even composed the music for those with sound. A short man, he could move with surprising quickness and ease. He invented many well-known comic situations, such as the feeding machine in Modern Times (1936). In this film, a worker is fed by a machine to save time on the assembly line. The machine goes out of control, and the worker is unable to stop it. Chaplin’s comic ideas were great. In The Gold Rush (1925), the hungry tramp makes an enjoyable meal of his shoe.
