Task-Based Language Teaching Definition: What is TBLT? TBLT refers to an approach based on the use of tasks as the core unit of planning and instruction in language teaching What is a task? (see page 27) a activity or goal that is carried out using language. Types of task (examples) Components of TBLT(see page 28) Clark, Scarino and Brownell (1994:40) believe that a task has four main components: ·a purpose: making sure the studnets have a reason for undertaking the task. ·a context: this can be real, simulated or imaginary, and involves sociolinguistic issues such as the location, the participants and their relationship, the time, and other important factors. ·a process: getting the students to use learning strategies such as problem solving , reasoning, inquiring, conceptualising and communicating. ·a product: there will be some form of outcome, either visible (a written plan, a play, a letter,etc) or invisible (enjoying a story, learning about another country,etc.) Features: a. It is a kind of learner-centered teaching. b. Based on meaning, the approach aims at solving problems in communication. c. It emphasizes the teaching process, in which students develop their ability of using English through completing authentic tasks. d. It advocates the teaching of linguistic knowledge which is helpful for using language. e. It places more emphasis on information exchange. Advantages: more student-centered motivate them in language learning allow them to use all the language it is favorable to their language fluency and confidence Disadvantages: These include the risk that students will stay within the narrow confines of familiar words and forms it is easy to be confined by some factors, such as limited space and time emphasize the result instead of the process
