AbstractVirtual design can reduce production cost, shorten period of development in maximum. It is the key to improve the core competitive power for enterprise in knowledge economy age, its also the technical basis for innovative design. As the key technology in virtual design, knowledge base is intelligent data base which collect all kinds of data, rules and experiencere used in processing and production. So, the development and application of virtual design system using knowledge base has great theoretical and realistic significance.In this paper, mathematical theory such as fuzzy set, rough set and so on are used to build knowledge base for car aluminum alloy wheel virtual design. It discretes, recombinants and expresses the knowledge, such as design data, design rules, design experience and so on in proper form, convenience for case-based reasoning and rule-based reasoning. Base on knowledge base, the paper take use of UG secondary develop tools GRIP to develop a software package “Virtual Design System for Car Aluminum Alloy Wheel”, in the Unigraphics NX 3.0 condition. Users can create rim, disc, spoke, accessory by inputting different parameters, then complete 3D modeling of the whole wheel. In the end, the author give experimental methods, simulate the wheel’s bending test, radial fatigue and impact test by ANSYS software, improve the system.The virtual design system for car a-alloy wheel base on knowledge base can shorten period of wheel design obviously, improve design efficiency. Car a-alloy wheel designed by the system have good parameters, concise features and meet the requirement of industry standard.
