Despite the tendency for many people to lump security into one big market there are actually several distinct markets, network, host, encryption, management, and compliance to name a few. Symantec is the best example of a host based security company trying to leverage its position into the network and failing. Cisco, on the other hand, is trying to expand beyond the network. Some key points: - This acquisition is an acknowledgement by Cisco that content control through anti-spam, anti-virus, and web filtering is in high demand and worth a tremendous premium for them to get in to. - Cisco does not have the core capability to execute on a content control strategy in their existing portfolio of IOS routers, PIX firewalls, and Catalyst switches. - IronPort’s solution is an SMTP proxy based on Linux running on Dell PCs. It is not an in-line network device. - While IronPort has unique reputation based anti-spam technology they do not have their own AV engine or? research, preferring to get that through partnerships with McAfee and Sophos. Fortinet is the only vendor that owns its core technology in AV and AS that can also block spam and viruses in the network with highly evolved (6th generation) custom ASICs for content processing and network acceleration. And, Fortinet does all of this with the same core technology that we use for Firewall/VPN. Cisco is obviously not going to execute on a UTM strategy. ? Microsoft has also been trying to get in to the email security business. This will be a new battle ground for those two giants while Fortinet continues to execute in the network with best of breed unified technology for countering network born threats.? ?
