The Bad Effect of the Enlargement of College Enrollment in ChinaThe enlargement of college enrollment is an education reform policy practiced by the People’s Republic in 1999 that tried to expand college enrollment in order to solve the problem of the economy andemployment(/publicfiles/business/htmlfiles/moe/moe_177/200407/2487.html ). The aim of the policy was stimulating domestic demand, stimulating consumption, promoting economic growth and easing the employmentpressure(/html/2009/9/12/148832-0.html). The practice of the policy has resulted in great increase of college enrollment, from 1596.8 thousand in total in 1999 to 5300 thousand in total in 2005(Beijing News). The quick increase has caused so many problems that the enlargement of college enrollment should be stopped as it concentrates more on quantity than on quality.As the enlargement of college enrollment has become more over the amount that the colleges in China can hold, the policy has resulted in inadequate infrastructures, contradictions between of the teachers and students and the decline of quality of education. In North China, for example, in 1999,Peking University hadnot enough quarters because of enrollment, and some students had to findaccommodation by themselves(Beijing News). In 2002, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission conducted a survey on 50 colleges and universities in China and found that 65% of the schools had no ability to continue enrollment because of the lack of teachers, and 86% of the schools had met the problem of inadequate infrastructures and funding shortages(Beijing News). Meanwhile, the lack of teachers has led to a sharp decline in the quality of teaching in Hunan. For example, from 1998 to 2005, the number of college students had increased 4.2 times, while the number of teachers had increased only 2.1 times(/html/2009/9/12/148832-0.html ).
