AbstractLanguageisaculturalandsocialphenomenon,whichplaysanimportantroleinourlife.Thereareobviousdifferencesinlanguageusagebetweenmenandwomen,whicharereflectedinmanyaspectssuchasvocabulary,syntax,pronunciation,speakingstyleandcommunicationstrategy.Withreformandopening-uppolicyandthedevelopmentofglobalization,Chinahasdeeperrelationandcommunicationwithothercountriesinpolitics,economyandculture,sothecomplimentresponsestrategiesbetweenmenandwomenhavechangedamongcontemporarycollegestudents.ThestudywillinvestigatethegenderdifferencesoncomplimentresponsesofcollegestudentsunderthecontextofChinese,onthetheoreticalguidanceofBrownandLevinsonsfacetheory,LeechspolitenessprincipleandGuYueguo‘sChinesepolitenessprincipleandthroughwaysoftape-recordingandobservationindailycommunication.ThedatawillbeanalyzedbyGoldvarbXfromdistributionalanalysis.Thestudyshowsthatundertheinfluenceofwesterncultureandconcept,theresponsestocomplimentshavechangedalotcomparedwiththoseyearsago.Fromtheperspectiveofmaco-strategies,bothmenandwomentendtoacceptcompliments;fromtheperspectiveofmicro-strategies,theychoosedifferentresponsestrategies,whichalsohavechangedwithcertaindegree.WomenoftenadoptpositivepolitestrategyAppreciationtosatisfytheneedsofaddressee‘spositiveface;menoftenuseExpanation.Thechoiceofcomplimentsresponsesarerelatedwithtopicsandthecomplimentgiverclosely.Whencomplimentedonappearanceandability/performance,mentendtoadoptUpgradetoshowtheirsenseofhumor,especiallyamongmalefriendswithcloserelationship,whilewomenseldomadoptthestrategy.Menthinkthattheself-promotionwillnotthreatthecomplimentgiver‘sface.Whenthetopicofthecomplimentisaboutpossession,mentendtoagreewiththegiverdirectlyoruseexplanationstrategytooffersomeinformationfortheythinkthecomplimentwantstoknowsomethingaboutit;womenaremorelikelytoappreciatethecomplimentgiverdirectlyorofferappreciationplusexplanationfortheycareaboutaffectiveinteraction.Womenoftenofferappreciationtomalecomplimentgiverstoshowtheirpoliteness;menaremorelikelytouseupgradestrat
