VariationinCadmiumAccumulationamongPeanutCultivarsinRelationtoDroughtStressGenqiangSu(Botany)AbstractPotexperimentswereconductedtostudythevariationsinmorpho-physiologicalcharacteristicsandcadmioumaccumulationinroots,stems,leaves,podwalls,andseedsamong15peanut(ArachishypogaeaL.)cultivars,underdifferentcadmiumlevels(0,2,and4mg/kg).Furthermore,theeffectsofdroughtoncadmiumaccumulationoffivepeanutcultivarsdifferinginseedCdsaccumulationwerealsoinvestigatedbyapotexperimentundersimulateddroughtconditions.Themainfindingsareasfollows:Theresultsshowedthatcadmiumtreatmenthadasignificantinhibitoryeffectonphotosynthesisandspectralreflectanceinpeanutleaves,dependingoncultivars.Comparedwiththecontrol,thephotosyntheticrateofallpeanutcultivarsdidnotdeclinesignificantlyexceptBaisha1016,Huayu20,Huayu22,Qishan68,Xinzhonghua5andXuhua13;theFv/Fmdidn’tdeclinesignificantlyexceptBaisha1016,DabaishaandYuhua15.CadmiumtreatmentincreasedthechlNDIandREPinHaihua1andZhenghong3,butdecreasedtheSIPI,whilethemSR705remainedunaffected.Therefore,cadmiumatlowlevelsdidnotaffectphotosyntheticsystemsinmostofpeanutcultivars.PeanutshoweddifferentcapabilitiesinCduptakeandaccumulationamongcultivars.Cadmiumconcentrationinseedsvariedform2-to4-fold.Thisresultshowsthatitispossibleforscreeningthepollution-safecultivarofpeanutstocultivateinfarmlandcontaminatedwithlowlevelsofCd.However,cadmiumcontentinseedsof15peanutcultivarswerehigherthan0.2mg/kg,thelimitationstandardofcadmiumcontentforsafeintake.Theaccumulationofcadmiumshowedasignificantdifferenceamongplantorgansortissues,itwasorderedas:testarootstemandleavepericarpembryo.Bycontrast,testahasahighcapabilitytoenrichcadmium,whilethecadmiumcontentofembryoandpericarpisrelativelylow.TheCdcontentsindifferentcomponentsinseedswasorderedas:proteinresiduefat.CdinproteinincreasedwithincreaseoftotalCdcontents,whereasnosignificantcorrelationwasfoundbetweennCdinfatandtotalCdinseeds.Amongcultivars,Qishan208,Luhua8andLuhua9canbeconsideredasgoodcandidatesforfurtherscreeningofpollution-
