These include American bollworm in cotton and stem borers in rice. When ingested by pest larvae, Bt releases toxins that damage the mid-gut of the pest, eventually killing it. Bt is the most commonly used biopesticide and can be found in hundreds of formulations. Bt is primarily used for field crops to control most of the economically important insect pests, including Heliothis sp. (e.g., corn ear-worm, Old World bollworm, tobacco budworm, American bollworm) for corn, citrus fruits, and tobacco crops; Earias sp. (e.g., green pea moth) for cotton crops; Spodoptera sp. (e.g., armyworms) for ornamental plants, vegetables, cotton, rice, peanuts, corn, peas, and grape crops; and Plutella sp. (e.g., diamondback moth) for cabbage and other cruciferous crops. Copyright ?
