In Critical Reading Strategies, steps are outlined and demonstrated that advanced ESL students can take in order to perform a variety of authentic academic reading tasks. These tasks include pre-reading, reading, and post-reading activities organized in rubrics that help improve critical reading skills and comprehension. These explanations of tasks and rubrics to organize the tasks are followed by a demonstration of how one advanced ESL student completed the reading and assessment rubrics for a text from PostGlobal. The packet concludes with a discussion of how the reading assessment rubrics, graphic organizers, and typology of speech acts will help to improve our understanding of genre, organization, and purpose. By completing these critical reading strategies, we will come to a deeper understanding of what texts are and what they do in the context of particular discourse communities.

Introduction
There are several important reasons why we develop and sharpen critical reading strategies in English, whether our purposes are academic, professional, or personal. On one list of reasons why, we might include the following three
Critical reading, because it begins with the assumption that writing is a social act (as opposed to an individual act), helps us to understand better the contextual and textual features of academic and professional writing. These features include social and historical factors that shape societies and the academic and professional writing that occurs within those societies.
