Unit Four Text A Turning Failure into Success I. Warm-up Activity Procedures: Have Ss divide into groups of ten; have them ask each other about whether they’ve experienced any failure and success in their life and discuss how one can turn failure into success; and put the following questions on board for their reference. Do you think it’s a shame to talk about your own failure? Can you recall any failure that upset you very much? What effect did that failure have on you? What do you think of it now? II. Text-related Information Hayakawa (1906-1992) Samuel Ichiye Hayakawa was a scholar, university president, and U.S. senator from California (1977-1983). He is best known for his popular writings on semantics (the study of the meanings of words and sentences) and for his career as a president of San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University). His book, Language in Action (1941), was a popular treatment of semantic theories. Emerson, Ralph Waldo (1803-1882) Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist and poet noted for his skill in presenting his ideas eloquently and in poetic language. His first published book, Nature (1836) had come to be regarded as Emerson’s most original and significant work, offering the essence of his philosophy of transcendentalism. Other important works of Emerson include Essay (1841 1844) and The Conduct of Life (1860). III. Structure of the Text What----Why----How Para. 1 putting up with an example to illustrate a common phenomenon: afraid of failure, eager to succeed. Para. 2 central idea: what like failure may, in the long run, prove beneficial. Para. 3 some wrong conceptions about success and failure.
