AbstractWith the interpretation of “Society Must Be Defended”, this paper discusses Foucault’s method of the genealogy and tries to introduce the genealogy to legal methodology. In order to learn the principle of genealogy, we analyze the strategy and the logic of genealogy by studying the case of the genealogical analysis of history-political discourse in this article. Therefore the paper discusses Foucaults method of power analysis. The history-political discourse, as a tool of power analysis, sets the scope and conditions of the principles of war applied to power analysis. Foucault’s genealogy is composed of strength analysis of power, structural analysis and historical analysis. And strength analysis of power must be finished in the genealogical history. So this paper discusses the method of power analysis which is separated from the genealogy methodology firstly, and then discusses the genealogy methodology as a whole, which contains the method of power analysis.This paper consists of four parts. The first chapter briefly discusses the three basic concepts of Foucault’s thought: enlightenment, knowledge and truth. In Foucault’s ideology, the enlightenment determines the theory of knowledge, and the theory of knowledge determines the view of truth. The three basic concepts constitute the framework of power analysis. Undoubtedly, to have a deep understanding of these three concepts is a prerequisite for interpretation of “Society Must Be Defended”. The second chapter discusses Foucaults method of power analysis. Based on the logic of war which contains three levels: strategy, tactics, weapons, we comb the logic and strategies of the method of power analysis from three aspects: the direction of analysis, methods on prevention and the tool of analysis.
