It then includes preschool children’s literature (aged between 0-6 or 7), children’s literature (in a narrow sense), and young adult literature or adolescent literature (for children aged between 11-18 or 12-20). Realistic fiction Realistic novels present a picture of typical characters in a typical environment. Fictional creation as it is, the people, events and places are usually true-to-life, easily recognizable, and sometimes even real. Fantasy Opposite to realist fiction, fantasy commonly employs magic and supernatural phenomena as major elements. It can be “high”, taking place in imaginative alternative worlds, or “low”, set in the world we are familiar with, or combine the two. Science Fiction Similar to fantasy, science fiction deals with imaginative content such as futuristic settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, extraterrestrial life, etc. However, it differs from fantasy in that its imaginary elements are largely possible within scientifically established laws of nature and the wish fulfillment can often be achieved through scientific or technological means or inventions. Romance The romantic novel primarily focuses on the relationship and romantic love between young people of different sexes, usually with a happy and optimistic ending. Adventure Stories Adventure fiction deals with an adventure, an exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger. It is especially popular with boys who are always eager for expeditions.
