第三章 美国儿童文学史简介 Introduction to American Children’s Literature 1.Pre-19th Century The books published in this period are mainly for little children with a clear educational purpose. Spiritual Milk for Boston Babes A Token for the Children of New England A New Gift for Children 2.19th Century From 1865 to 1914, the outbreak the First World War, classics kept coming one after another, hence the golden age of American children’s literature. Little Women Adventures of Tom Sawyer The Wonderful Wizard of Oz 2.19th Century The book market for children in the nineteenth century was dominated by three popular types, namely, domestic novels, dime novels and books of series. 2.19th Century 1. Domestic novels are chiefly for girls, in which traditional values and morality is praised and gender differences get stressed. 2. Dime novels, so called for its cheap price of ten cents, are usually for boys. They are often action filled, with a range of subcategories such as stories about the west ,detective stories, sports, science fiction and so on. 3.The third type, books of series, is suitable for both genders. Horatio Alger stands out to be the most famous author in this line, though his books are often said to be more suitable for boys. 3.Modern Period (After 1914) The flowering of children’s literature also saw the contribution of another aspect, that is, the coexistence of a variety of genres of children’s novels, extending a wide range of choice for children.
