第九章 《黑色棉花田》 (Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry) Introduction to the author Mildred DeLois Taylor (1943— ) is an African-American author known for her childrens fiction books. Taylor began writing her first book about the Logan family, Song of the Trees, in 1973.?She has taken great pride in her heritage and provides historical fiction about life for the Logan family. The Logans are loosely based on the members of Taylors own family and many events in the stories are also based on events in Taylors family?history. Characters The Logan family is a family with warmth and love and is the source of power and dignity. This family, who own land themselves, is one of the more privileged and rich black families in the town. Cassie, the narrator and protagonist of the story, is the only girl of the Logans, who is intelligent, na?ve, self-confident, and outspoken even in a white-dominated world and grows to understand the facts of racism. Writing Features and themes First person point of view from Cassie’s perspective, in chronological sequence according to the calendar gossip and story telling as devices Use of symbols Family and land are the two major themes of this novel. The loving and supportive family is the root of self-respect of the Logans. For the Logans, their sense of identity develops from pride in ownership of their land . Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry as an African-American Novel African-American literature is the literature produced in the United States by writers of African descent and directly pertains to the experiences and viewpoints of African-Americans. Based on stories about her own family members and set in a realistic historical context, Mildred Delois Taylor writes about the exclusion of blacks from the national consciousness. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry in many ways reflects the segregated social facts in the Great Depression.
