Introduction to the work Writing Features and themes Island of the Blue Dolphins is written in the first-person, through Karanas own eyes. Scott O’Dell’s writing style suits his narrator. O’Dell doesnt use fancy words or complicated figures of speech, for the narrator, Karana, is twelve at the beginning of the story. Her words and actions are appropriate for someone of that age . This novel has a strong theme of environment protection, as well as being a story of survival. Island of the Blue Dolphins as adventure story Adventure fiction deals with an adventure, an exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger. From the above definition, we can see that the novel belongs to this type. Karana, left on the island, leaves her people. Her life on the island alone can be seen as equivalent to a journey. She is also tested. And finally she achieves her maturity.
