Ⅰ.What is idiom? (Definition)
Idiom is a group of words with a meaning different to that suggested by the words.
Example:
1. Under the weather: being ill
2. Like a fish out of water (page21): being in different environment from you used to.
3. I am not going to teach you to suck eggs:
I am not going to teach you what you can do perfectly.
4. blabbermouth: someone can’t keep secrete
Note: Pay attention to the sample idioms in 21, and try to make yourself clear about the equivalent meanings.
Ⅱ. Figures of speech
Note:
Make yourself clear about the definitions of the 11 figures of speech (simile, metaphor, personification, metonymy, irony, etc.)
Put the figures of speech into usage. (can recognize the figures of speech in a sentence; can make sentences with certain figure of speech)
What do we use figures of speech for?
. Diana kicked the bucket.
(euphemism) it means Diana died.
. Anapodoton( fragment of sentence)
. Prosthesis(addition to a word)
Should bechance meet my eyes.
. Congeries [k?n?d?i?ri:z] (repetition use of words)
I am unsure doubtful uncertain.
. Enallage [en??l?d?i] (emphasis) 语法形式替代
