AbstractThe study on translation theories witnessed a rapid development in the past thirty years. Accordingly, the perspective of research became diversified. In the 1990s, Andre Lefevere and Susan Bassnett collaborated a book called Translation, Historyand Culture,which marked the beginning of “culture turn”. Since then the scholarshad realized that the study on literary translation could not only be confined to linguistic level, but be put in a cultural background. Lefevere pointed out that translation is a kind of “rewriting” or “manipulation” which is manipulated by some external factors such as social ideology, poetics and patronage. Studying the influence of these factors on the translation from different political period of time, the author can make a reasonable evaluation on the development of translation historically and culturally.Love Story is a novel about the pure love which touches countless of readers with its sad plot and eloquent words. The first translated version was published by Rong Rude with the pseudonym of Cai Guorong in 1973. It was the only novel with the theme of love published during the period of Cultural Revolution when the dominant ideology was “class struggle”. The marks of ideological manipulation can be easily found in Rong?s version. Then four versions were published in succession since the end of 1980s with the shift of time, in which Wang Dongfeng and Wang Yuechen?s version is relatively typical one.This paper aims to compare Rong?s and Wang?s version from the perspective ofLefevere?s rewriting theory. By comparing some examples of two versions? dictions, sentences, preface and footnotes, the author finds out translation is always restricted by a certain of culture and history, furthermore, it is also manipulated by the dominant ideology and poetics in different periods of time. Although the manipulation is shown on the literal level, it reveals that the translation should be in conformity with the current society. Thus, we have
