AbstractWilliamFaulkner,enjoyinghisreputationallaroundtheworld,isoneof the most famouswritersinmodernAmericanliterature.Thestory―ARoseforEmily‖isamasterpieceofhisshortstories;meanwhile,itisaclassicalGothicwork.InGothicnovels, the Gothicelementsaremainlyexpressedinthreemotifs:theweirdcharacters,thethemeofdeathandtheGothicmysterious,gloomyandhorriblecircumstance.ThroughthoseGothicelements,Faulknerdepictsthetragiclifeofanaristocraticlady, Emily, who gradually turns from anobleladyintoamurderer.Throughhertragiclife,Faulknerexposesthepoisonandconfinementofthepatriarchalismandthepuritanwomanhoodtoalady.Throughthishorriblestory,FaulknershowshissympathyforEmilyandpresents―a rose‖forher.Inthedeepersense,heexpresseshiscontradictoryfeelingstowardstheold world.Ontheonehand,hecherishesthememoryoftheoldsystem;ontheotherhand,he expresses his criticism ofthe sinsin that age.Basedonthetext,thisthesistriestoanalyzethemainGothicelementsinthisstoryand theanalysismainlyfocusesonthreemotifs:theweirdcharacters,thethemeofdeathandthe Gothicmysterious,gloomyandhorriblecircumstance.Throughtheanalysis,thisthesistries toinquirehowFaulkneruncoversthecontaminationoftheoldsouthernvaluestothose peoplearistocraticorordinary.AndwiththeaidoftheGothicgenre,hecondemnsthefetter oftheinhumanetradition, the patriarchal chauvinismand the puritan womanhood.Thisthesisisdividedintofiveparts.Thefirstpartistheintroductionwhichgivesabrief introductiontoWilliamFaulknerand―AroseforEmily‖,presents the origin anddevelopmentofGothicnovelsandthenintroducestheresearchresultsofthisstoryhomeandabroad.Thefollowingthreepartsarethemainbodypartincludingthree chapters.Thefirstchapteranalyzes the grotesquecharactersinthisstory. ThroughtheGothicinterpretationofabnormalactionsofMissEmily,Homer,Tobeandthetownspeopleaswellastheweirdrelationshipsbetweenthem,thisthesisexposestheeviloftheoldsocialsystem.ThesecondchapterstudiestheGothicthemeofdeath.ThedeathofEmily‘sfather,HomerandEmilyrespectivelyimpliesthe decline,struggleanddisapp
