Victory, one of his later works, mainly develops around the hero Axel Heyst?s lifetime in which he drifts aimlessly and seemly suffers repeatedly. Although uniquely emphasized depiction on love story appeared in this work has attracted attentions from scholars extensively, this fiction, as a whole, discusses matters of social problems all the same. He combines character?s courting process of love with spiritual development journey in human nature so as to endow his novels with a significance to reveal social problems. The early twentieth century has witnessed the social transformation of England, in which social unrests have brought people the shocks between culture and human nature that make everyone suffers the spiritual repercussions as a result of social conversion. Hence, in Victory, the book wrote by Conrad, we take the character?s role transformation of this work as the research object to pry about Britain?s social condition and people?s mental status during Edwardian period.The word “role” originates from drama, which is introduced firstly into social psychology by G. H. Mead, the famous American socialist, social psychologist and philosopher. The role theory is the theory to research the rules on individuals? role-playing and behaviors in their interactive process. A person?s role-playing is a gradually developed and formed process, which is influenced by several factors such as their living environment, role expectations as well as the regulations and requirements, etc. And in a very high frequency, an individual will change his roles more or less, that is, to en
