ABSTRACTThe director，Kwon-teak Im, is named as living fossil of Korean movies. Since his first movie Farewell to the Duman River in 1962, he has already created 102 movies. That is not only an admirable number but also one of the reasons why Kwon-teak Im can be famous in domestic and oversea moviedom. Besides this, his artisticachievements also get the admiration from the peer. In Korea, he is an ever-victoriousgeneral in top 3 Korean film festivals. In the international moviedom, he won a series of awards,including the Best Director in Shanghai International Film Festival, the Honorary Academy Award in Asia Film Award, the Best Director in Cannes International Film Festival and the Honorary Academy Award in Berlin International Film Festival. His first 50 movies mostly are commercial movies which follow the system and standard of Korean movies at that time. But a little artistic achievements are made in them. But the movie Weed in 1973 is his first movie which contains his real personal feelings and values. Actually it is also the first movie with his own style. So the main objects of study in this thesis are this movies since 1973.In the process of rewinding Kwon-teak Ims movies, we found the reasons why his movies hit and move the mind. In his movies, you can deeply feel the directors faith and enthusiasm by images. And you will be touched by his unique expressions and descriptions to the comprehensive quality of Korean nation. Specially, the description and publicity to Korean national image are more impressive and admirable.The feasibility of this topic lies on the following reasons. On the one hand, more and more relative researches about the construction of national image set a firm foundation and provide enough evidence to this thesis. On the other hand, the long span and continuity, the abundance in content, the diversity in form and directors consciousness of constructing the national image in the movies, those all make it practical to study the
