AbstractKnowingalanguageinvolvesmuchmorethanlearningtherulesofthelanguage.Itisrecognizedthatthespeechactsinalanguagearemuchmorecomplexthanthelanguageitself.Oneofthegoodcaseinpointcanberelatedtothefrequentemploymentofironystrategyincommunicationthanthenon-irony.Byconductingironicutterance,thespeakerconveysnotonlytheliteralmeaningbutalsotheemotionalinformationandtherealmeaning.Ironies,therefore,aremoreandmorewidelyusedindailycommunications,diplomaticlanguages,newsreports,literaryworksandadvertisinglanguages.Admittedly,ironyattractsscholars’attention,butmostoftheresearchseemstofocusontheexplorationofitsfeatures,definitionsandcomprehensions.Thereareotherswhoputemphasisonthedescriptiveanalysisofironiesinnovelsthough,thestudyoneffectivefactorsofironyseemslargelyneglected.Toaddressthisissue,DowntonAbbey,asoneofthehottestpiecesoftheBritishTVseries,hasbeenadministeredtoironicspeechactanalysisinthisresearch.ThepurposeofthepresentstudywastoexploreandvalidatetheSpeechActTheory,particularlyfocusedonironicspeechactsdistinguishedbyVanDijkandZhuXiaozhou.InthecontextofanalyzingandappreciatingtheTVseriesDowntonAbbey,theauthorattemptstoidentifythemajoreffectsofirony,themainfeaturesofirony;andtheunderlyingfactorsthatmightaffectthefunctionofironyinthegivencase.Inthethesis,theSpeechActTheoryisemployedtoexaminetheelementsrelevanttothestudyofdifferencesinironicusesmanifestedinthefirsttwoseasonsofDowntonAbbey.Fourresearchquestionsarecenteredtothisstudy:WhattypesofironicspeechactscanbeclassifiedinDowntonAbbey?WhatarethemainfeaturesoftheironymanifestedinDowntonAbbey?Whatarethefactorsthatimpacttheadoptionofirony,andhowdotheywork?WhyareironicspeechactsemployedingivencaseinDowntonAbbey?Presentedinaquantitativesketchaswellasaqualitativeviewofspeechactsinuse,theresultsofthestudyindicatethatthesocialstatusofthespeakerandtherelationshipbetweenthespeakerandtheheareraretwoeffectivefactorsoftheemploymentofirony.Andthepragmaticmeaningoftheironyismostlydifferentfromitslinguisticmeaning.Itisanunderstandin
