* These are basically hazard maps. Ask participants how they interpret these maps – what do they tell us? What are some good attributes? What are some problems? Good – describes conditions in terms of the normality of the conditions, dates are clearly indicated, clear presentation. Problems are that they are broad-scale – local conditions may vary. Say very little about vulnerability and impacts on communities affected by these hazards. * Hazards indicated by enhanced satellite images. Climate information can give mid- and long-term forecasts which are then interpreted at the national, sub-national and local level to determine local impacts. * Another hazard map. * Distribute Handout A. Assign one group of hazards to each group. The table should be completed on a flipchart. Time given is approximately 40 minutes. The rationale for the grouping of hazards is that there are many common impacts and response priorities shared by hazards within the same group. You can make this point upfront or make it a learning outcome of the Activity. * Ask each group to report back briefly and quickly (5 minutes/group). Ask the group to look at other groups’ outputs and note any similarities or differences. Distribute and review Handout B. Note the similarities of health effects of hazards and response priorities. This supports an “all-hazards approach”, which advocates common arrangements and generic plans for all hazards, and specific plans only for the different aspects of different hazards. * The framework produces: 1 community risk management programme with 3 components: hazard reduction, vulnerability reduction and emergency preparedness programme to protect public health and safety in communities. * Introduce the Learning Objectives for this module.
