All you need is love Objectives of active reading 1 Background Main characters and narrator Plot summary Reporting verbs About the author -Emily Bronte The Bronte Sisters The Brontes lived in Haworth, a Yorkshire village in the midst of the moors. These wild, desolate expanses—later the setting of Wuthering Heights—made up the Brontes’ daily environment, and Emily lived among them her entire life. Charlotte Bronte (1816-1855) Eldest one of the Bronte sisters. Well-known for her autobiographical novel Jane Eyre Emily Bronte (1818-1848) she published only one novel, Wuthering Heights (1847), a story of doomed love and revenge. But that single work has its place among the masterpieces of English literature. In contrast to novels written by authoritative and reliable narrators, Emily introduced an unreliable narrator, Lockwood. Anne Bronte (1820-1849), sister of Charlotte Bronte and Emily Bronte. Anne Bronte is best known for her novels Agnes Grey (1847) and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848), which are generally considered more conservative novels than those of her sisters. ■Title: Wuthering: is the northern pronunciation of “weathering”, which means standing the bad weather; heights: pieces of flat land at the top of a hill ■Setting: the 18th century Northern England ■Point of view: 1st person narrators of Mr. Lockwood and Mrs Ellen (Nelly) Dean ■Theme: love and revenge point of view narrated in Nelly’s voice, from Nelly’s point of view, focusing only on what Nelly can see and hear, or what she can find out indirectly. Nelly frequently comments on what the other characters think and feel, and on what their motivations are, but these comments are all based on her own interpretations of the other characters—she is not an omniscient narrator.
