The SR is the intense continuum or quasi-monochromatic light in the region from infrared to hard X-ray through extreme (vacuum) ultraviolet and soft X-ray and very useful for materials and life sciences. At present, there are 50 SR facilities in the world and in China, 3 facilities. They are in Beijing, Hefei and Taiwan. In Shanghai, a new facility will be opened in 2009 at Pudong district. Shanghai Institute for Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences is responsible for its construction. In this lecture, I would like to talk about characteristics of synchrotron radiation, light source, optical instruments, applications of SR in the vacuum ultraviolet and soft X-ray regions, in the hard X-ray region and in the infrared regi
