However, she only left a masterpiece—Wuthering Heights in her short time life. This novel is listed as a world famous work due to its charm and wildly popularity, although the value of this novel was not recognized until the 20th century. Wuthering Heights is a blockbuster. It makes the deep impression on readers with its Gothic description, the hero’s crazy revenge and the undying love between Heathcliff and Catherine.The novel centers on the all-encompassing, passionate, but ultimately doomed love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, and on how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and the people around them. Love—hatred—revenge—duel of Heathcliff is not only the essence of the novel, but also the thread throughout the novel. This thesis mainly discusses the causes for Heathcliff’s revenge. In Part One, the thesis points out that the internal cause is Heathcliff’s twisted character because of the long-time humiliation. In Part Two, the thesis shows that the external cause is Catherine’s betrayal of Heathcliff’s love for her. And in Part Three, the thesis treats the underlying cause, pointing out that Heathcliff is lack of psychological needs. In other words, For Heathcliff, his two essential needs for having enough to eat and wear, and for safety have been satisfied, but his needs for love, for being respected, and for self-realization were ignored. Hence, having lost love, the Heathcliff is indulged in hatred. In short, the above three chapters aim to help us know more about the hero Heathcliff and the causes for his revenge, indicating that Heathcliff’s revenge resulted from his dual
