林语堂 两脚踏东西文化 一心评宇宙文章 —《我的话》 About his life Theory of translation Works Appreciate About “humor” About his life Lin Yutang (October 10, 1895 – March 26, 1976) was a Chinese writer and inventor（ Mingkwai Typewriter Machine ）. Lin studied for his bachelors degree at Saint Johns University in Shanghai, then received a half-scholarship to continue study for a doctoral degree at Harvard University. His many works represent an attempt to bridge the cultural gap between the East and the West. He was?nominated?for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times in the 1970s. His?representative works include?Moment in Peking?,?A Leaf in the Storm,?The Vermillion Gate,?Between Tears and Laughter，My Country and My People, The Chinese- English Dictionary of Modern Usage ?etc. Theory of translation The most systematic and important one is On Translation, which was written in Chinese as a preface to book（《翻译论》）edited by Wu Shutian in 1933. At the very beginning of the article, Lin asserted, “Translation is a fine art and any achievement made in an art depends on one’s gifts for this art, as well as enough training in this field.
