5 Nuclear power plants make heat by splitting or dividing atoms. This process really makes too much heat. The heat must be cooled by water. Otherwise, the plant might melt or explode. Then, large amounts of radiation would escape into the air. 6 Some people said there was no need to worry. Nuclear power plants had safety systems. Some experts said that there would be no more accidents. They were wrong. TextB_P2 ? N CH N 4 After all, scientists did not know much about nuclear power. Using nuclear power to make electricity was new. Most plants make electricity by burning coal or oil. The idea is the same for all three. First, coal, oil, or nuclear power is used to make heat. The heat turns water into steam. The steam powers the machines that make electricity. Text B 7 On April 26, 1986, another accident happened. It took place at a nuclear power plant in Russia, a large country with land in both Asia and Europe. The Chernobyl plant was about 70 miles from a big city. This accident was much worse than the one in 1979. 8 At Chernobyl, the plant exploded. Its roof blew off. Radiation escaped into the air. It spread over the area close to the plant. To make things worse, winds blew the fallout far away. 9 That’s how the world learned about the disaster. Russia did not say anything about it. Two days after the explosion, people in Sweden were alarmed. Sweden, a country in Europe, is far from Russia. Scientists found huge amounts of radiation in the air. The winds blowing from Russia were carrying it. 10 Only then did Russian scientists say there had been an accident. Soon it became clear how bad it was. Thirty people died. More than 200 were injured. The fallout spread quickly. It harmed farm crops and land in many parts of Russia and Europe. TextB_P3 ? CH Text B N N N 11 Doctors came to the area. They checked workers and people who lived near the plant. Everyone close to the plant had gotten high amounts of radiation. This was very bad
