Introduction Affect in Language Learning Affect is considered broadly as aspects of emotion, feeling, mood, or attitude. Learners’ emotions exert a great influence on their learning behavior and learning outcomes. Affect Cognition The affective side of learning is not in opposition to the cognitive side. Affect and cognition cannot be separated from each other. The absence of emotion compromises our cognitive capacity. Significance of Affect in Language Learning First, attention to affective aspects can lead to more effective language learning. Negative emotions such as anxiety, stress, anger, or depression will impede learning while positive emotions such as self-esteem, empathy, or motivation can greatly facilitate the language learning process. Second, emphasis on affect facilitates the whole person development. Language teaching is not just for reaching certain language goals, but also for deeper aims, for pursuing new life goals. As we teach the language, we also educate learners to live more satisfying lives and to be responsible members of society. Therefore, attention to affect is indispensable in language teaching. In turn, language classroom contributes to educating learners affectively. For instance, collaborative learning helps to develop interpersonal intelligence, characterized by the ability to understand and respond effectively to others, which is of great value to affective education. Background Since the eighteenth century, focus was on understanding the rational, cognitive functions of our mind, while denying the importance of affective factors in education. One of the consequences of this situation is emotional illiteracy. In the late 1970s and 1980s, foreign and second language teacher trainers and writers searched for ways to enrich language learning by incorporating aspects of the affective dimension of learners.
