AbstractThecontent,distributionandspeciationofheavymetalsinthesedimentfromXiamenwesternBaywerestudied.ThepollutionsourceandcontributionofheavymetalsinthesedimentwererevealedbyusingPb-Srisotopetracingtechnique.Theconclusionsweresummarizedasfollows,ThecontentofheavymetalsinthesurfacesedimentofeachsitefromXiamenWesternBaywasasfollows,Fe>Ti>Mn(majorelements),Zn>Ba>Cr>Cu>V>Ni>Li>Pb>Sr>Co(tracemetals).Thecontentleveldifferencesofheavymetalswerelarge.Mostelementshaddifferentdegreeofpollution.Fe,Ti,Ba,Co,VandLimainlyexistedintheresidualfractions.Pbmainlyexistedintheresidualfraction,followedbyextractablefraction.TheresidualfractionsofZn,Sr,Cr,Cu,MnandNiwerenotdominant.Assessmentresultsofheavymetalpollutioninthesurfacesedimentsusingseveralevaluationmethodswerebasicallyaccordant.ThepollutiondegreeofCu,Zn,Co,Cr,PbandNiweresevere.SamplingsiteS7wasthemostpolluted.Ratiosofsecondaryphasetoprimaryphase(RSP,forshort)ofFe,Ba,Co,VandLiwerelessthan1.0ateachsamplingsite.ThemaximumRSPvaluesofZn,Cr,CuandNiinS7showedseverepollution.TheRSPvaluesofZn,Cr,CuandNiinS8andS13showedminorpollution.ModifiedBCR-sequentialextractionshowedtheresidualfractionsofFe,Zn,Ba,Ti,Co,Cr,Ni,PbandVweredominantincoresediments.Lowlevelsofotherthreefractionsshowedaweakmigrationoftheaboveheavymetals.InthecoresedimentsofH1andH2,Zn,Cu,CoandNishowedhighlevelsinnon-residualfactions,whileresidualfactionsinregolithandparentmaterialweredominant.ThehumaninputofZn,Cu,CoandNiwereobvious.DirectemissionwasthemainpathwaysofheavymetalpollutioninH1andH2coresediments.AtmosphericdepositionandindustrialIIIdischargewerethemainpathwaysofheavymetalpollutioninH3coresediment.Pbisotopiccompositionhadgreaterdifferencesinsurfacesediments.PbpollutionatsitesS1,S2,S3,S4andS5wasmainlyfromindustrialemissionsandPb-Zndeposit.Pbpollutionatothersamplingsiteswasmainlyfrommarinepaintsandelectroplatingsewage.Pbisotoperatiosinsurfacesedimentsweredifferentfromthoseinvehicleexhaustandcoalcombustion.Pb-ZndepositwasmainpollutionsourcesinsomeH2coresediements.Mo
