Chapter I Introduction 1.Background of the study “Without grammar, little can be conveyed; without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed.” (Wilkins, 1982) Vocabulary learning is an important aspect of second language acquisition. However, it was not until 1970s that research into vocabulary learning began to receive attention and gain development in applied linguistics. English Curriculum Standards (2001) states that low vocabulary level makes it hard to develop language use ability. Many students complain it is difficult to memorize words, and it is easy to forget them. Therefore, some students get to dislike memorizing words even dislike English The writer thinks the main reason is as following: There are only 600-700 words in primary school and these words are mostly high frequency words which appear frequently in the text book so that students can easily master them. However, the vocabulary in high school is becoming larger and the repetition of words is low so that students can hardly master the words in class. Therefore, if the teachers pay much attention to the vocabulary learning strategies then the students can master some effective vocabulary strategies so that they can improve the learning effectiveness and self-learning ability. 2. Purpose of the study This study is to explore effective model of vocabulary learning strategies and verify the effectiveness of vocabulary learning strategies in common high school. 3.Significance of the study One of the important purposes of foundermental English education is to have students gain the ability of automatic learning, and finally independently learn and master language without the help of teachers.
