Evolving Curriculum of HMS HMS started its curriculum reform in 1987, namely “New Pathway”. An intensive, 14-month pre-clerkship program teaching the core medical knowledge. Students acquire critical knowledge before class through watching pre-recording video (5-8 min), in addition to assigned readings and questions to investigate. Class time is used to develop the thinking and reasoning skills needed to solve difficult problems. Teams of 4-6 students are assigned to share their findings with the rest of their 40-plus-person class in a discussion that generates a consensus answer. Students are assigned to expose clinical scenario during the class and in the clinic setting ASAP in October of 2nd year. New Challenges after Reforming Curriculum The essence of this new curriculum reform is to give students the tools to think differently. So, the challenge is going to be: How do students work with factual knowledge or how are students going to be taught with factual knowledge to solve clinical problem since most of students will now learn on their own? To solve this challenge, case-based collaborative learning (CBCL) is at the core of first-year classes-a combination of case-based, team-based, and problem-based learning. This format teaching will be extended to all the pre-clerkship-year courses.
